A new change

I went to the dermatologist today. She's putting me on a new (well, new to me) medication, Accutane. It's pretty intense stuff. One of the side effects is severe birth defects if you were to get pregnant so if you are a female on the medication you have to get 2 pregnancy tests every month before they will refill your prescription. It's a 6 month treatment period. And you have to be using 2 types of birth control. Since I'm not on birth control pills, she prescribed me some. Hopefully, these don't make me sick. My system is sensitive to BCP's. Another side effect is that it can raise your trigylceride levels. So my doctor is putting me on a low carb diet since I'm already overweight and on top of that, she suspects I have PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome). She ran some blood work to check on that. I have all the symptoms of that but I can never get a diagnosis of that because my blood levels stay on the borderline. She said if I have PCOS, I'll have to go to a low carb diet anyway so it's best to get a jump on it.

Low carb diet.. not thrilled about that but I need to do it for my health so I'll suck it up. No clue where to begin with what to eat and such so if anyone has an advice or help, that'd be great.

I go back to the dr. on 3/31 so I'll update my progress as I go along.

  1. I took Accutane back in 2003, that stuff is very intense but I haven't had any skin trouble since (other than during pregnancy. Be sure to keep lots of chap-stick on hand because it will dry your lips out like crazy. I'm also going on a low carb diet starting Monday so maybe we can do this together. :) Love ya Marie!

  2. Check out the Dr. Akins plan. There is a lot of great information on their website about good carbs vs bad carbs and what foods to eat. I think South Beach Diet is along the same principlas as well.
Dr. Oz's "You on a Diet" also talks about carbs too and what you should be eating and should be avoiding.
